“Connecting Talents and Opportunities”  Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Keynote Lecture at Harvard University

Organized by:  Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University

Audience:  Approximately 550

The “Connecting Talents and Opportunities” Program is an initiative dedicated to identifying and fostering young talents from Latin America and the United States who are passionate about STEAM fields. It was launched in October 2023 to create bridges between stakeholders who support these initiatives, providing opportunities that impact their lives and communities.

With the mission of creating an enabling environment where talented young people passionate about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), particularly those from underserved communities in Latin America and the US, can thrive. Its mission is to connect these emerging talents with scientists, educational foundations, business leaders, and philanthropists, providing them with the perspective, knowledge, and inspiration they need to reach their full potential. Through our conferences and programs, we aim to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, fostering a community that promotes growth and innovation.

With the impact of providing underprivileged students with access to quality education, mentorship, and professional networks, this program empowers them to overcome barriers and pursue successful careers in STEAM fields. As these students thrive, they not only secure a brighter future, but also drive economic and social progress within their communities, fostering a new generation of leaders and innovators across the Americas.

Forum “Science in Action:  Building Peace and Social Development”, within the framework of the World Day of Science for Peace and Development and Receiving the International “Hugo Gutiérrez Vega” Award, in its 14th Edition

Organized by: Autonomous University of Querétaro

This meeting brings together leading professionals and academics at an international level to discuss and share the role of scientific progress as a driver of social transformation to promote peace, development and social well-being.

It is necessary to recognize that science often seems to be out of reach of the majority of society. The results of projects, as well as scientific training itself, seem to be reserved only for a specific area of the population. In order to revalue the role of science in building advanced, developed, prosperous and sustainable societies, it is necessary to change this perception, increase the community's confidence in science, as well as end the perception of it as unattainable or inapplicable.

In this sense, UNESCO declared November 10 as the World Day of Science for Peace and Development in 2001, with the aim of promoting scientific advances in society, creating more sustainable societies, raising awareness of the fragility of our planet, and providing citizens with the scientific knowledge necessary to make well-informed decisions to act in their daily lives.

Within this framework, the Science and Society program of the Autonomous University of Querétaro organized the Forum “Science in Action: Building Peace and Social Development”, with the aim of promoting through all activities: dialogues, workshops and interdisciplinary meetings the importance of appropriating science as a transformative element of society, involving different actors from the scientific, cultural, educational, activist and social development promotion community.

Dr. Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1992, had an agenda at this meeting, participating in the inauguration of the Science in Action Forum: Building Peace and Social Development, where she spoke extensively about the Culture of Peace. With an audience of students, teachers, mothers and fathers, and members of indigenous peoples, she spoke about topics of education for peace, collective action and personal commitment, human inequalities and dehumanization, the legacy of peace and science at the service of humanity, comprehensive education and conflict mediation, the importance of diversity and alliances for peace.

She also participated in the Panel on Human Rights and the rescue of languages and traditions of indigenous peoples together with Dr. Ewald Hekking, a prominent researcher and linguist, with Dr. Ana Alonso, and Ms. María Nieto from the Faculty of Law. Focused on the need for recognition of indigenous systems, identifying their particularities, the urgency of reaching agreements within institutions such as universities and respect for languages and traditions.
